Why do some globes have a metal meridian or semi-meridian around them?Updated a year ago

Most globes feature a metal ring, either in the form of a full circle or a half circle. These rings, known as meridians, are sometimes marked with degrees from 0º at the equator to 90º at either pole on certain globe designs, aiding in the location of positions on the globe.

While most world globes display longitude and latitude lines on the maps, the numbers on the meridian have become less significant and are primarily included for aesthetic purposes. Nevertheless, the ring itself continues to serve the purpose of holding the globe ball in place. For further details, refer to our guide on globe mounting styles.
