When looking at a globe, you can find a variety of named places. Due to space limitations, attempts to list all nations and capitals are made, followed by the biggest city in that country or state, or a famous city. Typically, there are more names on the coastline because there is more room for them.

Additionally, if a town has importance beyond its size or status as a capital, it is added to the list. The U.S. Government maintains a list of names for cities and countries outside North America, referring to them as "conventional" names. These names are easier to understand than literal translations and are the reason why maps show "Finland," for example, instead of "Suomi."
