Why are globes so expensive to ship?Updated 10 months ago
Globes can be expensive to ship due to several reasons, but the main reason is due to globes coming preassembled and therefore requiring larger boxes. A typical 12 inch desk globe reassembled generally ships in a 14” x 14” x 19” box and weighs about 6 pounds. However, FedEx and UPS use dimensional weight to calculate the cost. For example the size of the box noted is 3724 cubic inches which is then divided by the carriers dimensional factor of 138 (domestic and international dim factors are different) giving this box a dimensional weight of 26.99 pounds. The carrier calculates the rate on 27 pounds instead of the actual size and weight of 6 pounds. We work diligently to help manufacturers find new ways of packaging in order to keep shipping as inexpensive as possible.
